What is a MiniDisc?
A MiniDisc (also known as an MD or Mini Disc) is a rewritable magneto-optical disc format used for data storage, offering capacities of 60, 74, and eventually 80 minutes of digital audio. In layman’s terms, they each look like a small CD.
Sony introduced the MiniDisc in September 1992 and made it available for purchase in November of the same year in Japan, followed by a December launch in Europe, North America, and other markets.
The format utilised ATRAC audio data compression, a proprietary technology actually developed by Sony itself Its successor, Hi-MD, later included the ability to record in linear PCM digital format, providing audio quality on par with that of a compact disc.
MiniDiscs gained significant popularity in Japan and achieved moderate success in Europe. Despite being intended as a replacement for cassette tapes, the format failed to achieve widespread global adoption.
